Blair History from the files of Lucy Steele, Loudon Tennessee
JOHN BLAIR
John Blair, sixth child of Hugh Blair and his wife Mary Dawson, was born Apr. 28, 1750 in Lancaster Co. Pa.  He was married in Guildford Co. N.C. Feb. 9, 1771 to his first wife, Jean Gamble who was born in Guilford Co. N. C. Oct. 6, 1749. This couple settled in Washington County, Tennessee (then North Carolina) and during the Revolution, John was a soldier and fought at the Battle of King's Mountain. (Patriot Index, D.A.R. page 63). John was appointed one of the five Commissioners to survey ninety lots of land for a village to be called Leesburg, which was located about six mines south of Jonesboro. John's farm, mill and home were at Leesburg, which became a thriving community(now extinct), and the fact that he owned land and the mill are evidenced in his will which was probated at the January session of Court in Washington Co. in 1820.  He wills" land the mill"- there is no doubt but that he was a farmer and miller. On May 13, 1793 his first wife Jean Gamble died, leaving him with eight children, the eldest being nineteen and the youngest four. On Nov. 26, 1793 he was married to Hannah Carruthers of Abington Va.  Their marriage license record of Washington Co. N.C. is in the records of Greene Co. Tenn. At Greenville.  Most likely they were from that part of Washington Co. which was cut off to form Green Co. but were issued by John Sevier, Clerk of Washington Co.  John and Hannah's , marriage bond (Book 1787-1840) reads: John Blair to Hannah Carruthers, Nov. 26, 1793, Territory U.S.A., South Ohio River, Washington Co. Rites by Robert Martin.

John Blair is called John "The Miller" because he owned a mill on Big Limestone Creek.  He came to America in about 1746 with his parents, Hugh Blair and his wife Mary Dawson.  One of their daughters, Jane Blair was born at sea on the way to America on August 20, 1746, and she married John
Cummings, Jr.  John "The Miller" Blair married Jean Gamble February 9, 1771 in Guilford County, North Carolina, and he fought in the American Revolution at the Battle of King's Mountain, for which he received a land grant inTennessee where his family moved to claim the land.  I visited the site ofwhere Blair's Ferry launched in Loudon County, Tennessee and enjoyed  visiting the Steekee Cemetery there.
Hugh Blair was born about 1718 in Galloway, Scotland, and he married Mary Dawson in about 1738 in Ireland where some of his first children were born. John "The Miller" Blair was born April 28, 1749 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania about three years after his parents arrived in America.
